We were one of three contractors invited to tender. We won the work because our methodology document was the only one to (a) treat the custom oak rails, the bespoke shopfront signage panel and the changing room joinery as named workstreams with their own bench-joiner lead times rather than as catalogue items, (b) propose lighting as a merchandising workstream in its own right with track lighting on every rail and warm 2700K accent lighting at the feature display rather than as a generic ambient lighting allowance, and (c) coordinate the high-street trading neighbours from week one with permitted-hours deliveries and a daily 4.30pm hoarding-line tidy-down so the build itself wouldn't disrupt the existing boutique trade either side of us.

The rails are the room's furniture. Off-the-shelf catalogue rails would not have matched the brand's specification on dimension, finish or hanging tolerance. Limewash paint is a finish that depends on a properly cured plaster substrate — applied too soon, it skins differently to the rest of the wall. We sequenced the plastering for the end of week 2 with a 14-day cure window, mist coat applied at the cure point in week 4, two coats of limewash applied across week 5. The build programme had to absorb that cure time without slip; we sequenced the joinery, lighting and shopfront workstreams in parallel through weeks 3-5 so the cure was a parallel-track allowance rather than a programme block.
Independent boutique retail lives or dies on how the merchandise looks under the lights. We ran lighting as a workstream led by a specialist commercial lighting designer. Three parallel runs of brass-finish track on the ceiling, every rail individually lit from above by a dedicated 35W warm 2700K LED spot, accent lighting at the feature display from a denser-spec spot bank, mirror lighting in each changing room with the warm-front / cool-back split that flatters in-fitting room reflection. The signage panel was a hand-painted hardwood plank with brushed-brass-effect inset lettering, executed by a specialist signwriter who runs a small studio in the High Peak. Not a digital print, not a vinyl wrap. The brand's mailing list activation was scheduled for the Tuesday of opening week with an open-day-Saturday call to action. We sequenced strip-out and structural work in week 1, plastering completed end of week 2, joinery and lighting and shopfront all running in parallel through weeks 3-4, mist coat applied week 4, two coats of limewash across week 5, finished decoration ready for the brand's merchandising-in by Wednesday of opening week.
Trading neighbours respected from week one. Hoarding line agreed with both neighbouring boutiques in week 1. Noisy trades scheduled inside the shared trading hours window with no work before neighbours' shutters were up. Material deliveries via the rear service lane during permitted town centre hours only. Daily 4.30pm tidy-down. After the build, both neighbours sent emails to the brand owner saying we had been "the politest contractor on Grove Street in a decade." That detail isn't a marketing line; it's the kind of operational respect that gets a contractor a recommendation to the next independent boutique opening on the street.
Opening Saturday as the master calendar. Programme sequenced backwards from the 10am Saturday ribbon-cut. Build complete Wednesday of opening week to give the brand owner the Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning to merchandise-in their stock, dress the windows, and train their team. The mailing list has grown by approximately 1,800 names since opening. The founder is already in conversation with us about a second store on a Cheshire town high street within the next 18 months.
